Legal guardianship
Guardianship is a legal act, through which a family becomes responsible for a child who lacks family support. A contract is signed between public authorities and the guardian that specifies that the child in care is to be treated as a legitimate child of the family who enjoys the same rights and responsibilities as a biological child, except for family name and inheritance rights.
This contract can be terminated :
- by public authorities, if there is evidence that the family has failed to meet its obligations.
- if the child so decides once he or she reaches the prescribed age.
